The Royal Australian Navy has intercepted a vessel with about 35 asylum seekers on board off the Northern Territory coast.

The boat was boarded about 95 nautical miles north of Darwin, near Bathurst Island, this morning.

Customs and the Immigration Department have not commented on the matter.

The asylum seekers are thought to be on their way to Darwin or possibly Christmas Island.
