Victoria’s Commissioner for Children and Young People has warned of the possibility of a future Royal Commission into the treatment of children currently held in immigration detention.

Victoria’s Commissioner for Children and Young People has warned of the possibility of a future Royal Commission into the treatment of children currently held in immigration detention.

Bernie Geary signalled the warning after the federal government refused him access to the Melbourne Immigration Transit Accomodation detention centre.

Commissoner Geary says he was told the National Children’s Commissioner Megan Mitchell can visit children in detention centres, but state children’s commissioners cannot.

But Commissioner Geary told Murray Silby, he believes he has the right to investigate the welfare of vulnerable children in Victoria.
