Navy responds to overnight asylum boat distress signal

August 07, 2013

The Australian navy responded last night to an asylum seeker boat’s distress signal.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority said 67 people were believed to be on board.

It says the boat did not appear to be in any immediate danger.

The group will undergo health and security checks at the Christmas Island detention centre.

The Government has indicated that anyone arriving by boat will be sent to either Papua New Guinea or Nauru.
