Four asylum seeker boats intercepted near Christmas Island

FOUR boats with nearly 250 asylum seekers on board, have been intercepted near Christmas Island in the past three days, reported Customs and Border Protection services through media releases.

HMAS Bathurst and Melville, operating under BPC intercepted Three boats carrying 66, 68 and 38 passengers respectively, last Monday. Another boat was intercepted by HMAS Melville on Tuesday. It was reportedly carrying 78 people.

All passengers have been transferred to Christmas Island for initial medical, security and identity checks.

Number of boats arriving after the ‘newly’ announced settlement deal with PNG have now jumped to Five.
