26-year-old Afghan man, Ali Ahmad Jafari, died of a heart attack.

26-year-old Afghan man, Ali Ahmad Jafari, died of a heart attack.

A man who died in Sydney’s Villawood Detention Centre yesterday had a fatal heart attack aged just 26, refugee advocates say.

The Refugee Action Coalition says he was a Hazara Afghan being held in detention after his claim for asylum was rejected in 2010.

The man collapsed and died yesterday.

Police say he appears to have died from natural causes and it is not clear whether he had a medical condition.

Refugee Action Coalition spokesman Mark Goudkamp says the death is concerning.

“If anyone in the wider community who was in their 20s died of natural causes, people would raise questions about that, and it’s no different inside immigration detention – in fact, it’s more important inside immigration detention,” Mr Goudkamp said.

The matter has been referred to police, who are waiting on the results of an autopsy due tomorrow to determine how he died and will prepare a report for the Coroner.

The Department of Immigration has expressed its sympathy to the man’s family.
