Asylum-seekers in distress rescued

ANOTHER asylum seeker boat has been rescued by maritime authorities off Christmas Island after it issued a distress call.

A spokeswoman for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said a distress call was received at 7pm last night, 84 nautical miles north-east of Christmas Island.

About 60 people were on board and were rescued by the Australian Customs vessel Ocean Protector, which is transferring the asylum seekers to Christmas Island.
