Two more asylum boats intercepted near Christmas Island

April 26, 2013

AUTHORITIES have intercepted two suspected asylum seeker boats with more than 200 people on board.

Both boats were spotted near Christmas Island by Australian navy vessels on Wednesday night.

The first had 131 passengers and two crew on board and the other had 92 passengers.

The passengers have been transferred to Christmas Island for security and health checks.

They risk being sent to Australia’s processing centres on Nauru and Papua New Guinea’s Manus Island.

More than 16,000 people have arrived by boat since Labor reintroduced offshore processing in August 2012.
