Asylum seeker boat intercepted near Broome

A boat carrying 72 asylum seekers has been intercepted near Broome in Western Australia’s north.

A number of the passengers were taken to Broome for medical reasons and the remainder will be transferred to Christmas Island for health and security checks.

A second boat, carrying 25 asylum seekers, was intercepted yesterday, north-west of Christmas Island.

Those passengers are being transferred to the island.

Another boat carrying 75 asylum seekers has also been intercepted within Flying Fish Cove at Christmas Island on last Wednesday. HMAS Maitland, operating under the control of Border Protection Command assisted the vessel.
