Boat carrying 27 asylum seekers arrives near Cocos Islands

October 03, 2012

A BOAT carrying 27 suspected asylum seekers has been intercepted near the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said the boat was initially detected by a RAAF maritime patrol aircraft before it was intercepted by Customs and Border Protection Command overnight.

The 27 people on board have been transferred to Australian government authorities on the Cocos Islands.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship will arrange for them to be transferred to Christmas Island for security, health and identity checks.

The government says the asylum seekers are at risk of transfer to Nauru or Papua New Guinea’s Manus Island under the government’s offshore processing regime.
