Customs intercepts asylum seeker boat

September 17, 2012

Authorities have intercepted a boat carrying 10 suspected asylum seekers off the West Australian coast.

Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said ACV Hervey Bay, operating under the control of Border Protection Command, intercepted the suspected irregular entry vessel northwest of Cocos (Keeling) Islands on Monday afternoon.

The minister said initial indications suggested there were 10 people on board.

Border Protection Command took the passengers to the Cocos Islands and will transfer them to the Christmas Island detention centre for security, health and identity checks.
